Every upholstered piece carries a manufacturer's cleaning code, and it's the single most important thing about the job. W means water-based cleaning is safe. S means solvent only — put water on it and you get rings and shrinkage. WS takes either. X means vacuum only, and any company that wet-cleans an X-coded piece in your living room is gambling with your furniture.
We find the tag, test an inconspicuous area for colour-fastness and texture change, and then choose between hot-water extraction, low-moisture encapsulation or a dry solvent method. On a synthetic-weave family sofa that's usually a full extraction. On a linen-blend accent chair or a viscose rug it's almost never that. Getting this wrong is how a chair comes back stiff, ringed or two shades lighter down one arm.

The dark shine on a headrest isn't dirt — it's oxidised skin oil, and it needs solvent-side pre-treatment and dwell time rather than more water and harder scrubbing. Food and drink spills come out well. Ink, dye transfer from dark denim on a light sofa, sun fade and bleach contact are permanent changes to the fibre, and we say so before you pay us to attempt them.
Pets, kids and the smell you stopped noticing — but guests didn't.
Fabric is a sponge for everything that happens on it. Dog oils, cat accidents, spilled milk that dried under a cushion — those are organic and they need an enzyme that breaks the source down, not a deodoriser that parks a scent on top for a fortnight. We treat the full footprint of an accident, which on upholstery almost always runs wider and deeper than the visible mark, and we check the deck under the cushions where the liquid actually pooled.
If the smell has soaked into the foam core rather than the cover, cleaning the surface buys you weeks, not years. We'll tell you when that's the situation instead of selling you a second and third visit.
Drying, timing and how often — the practical answers.
Most synthetic sofas are dry in two to six hours with a fan running or a window open; low-moisture work on delicate fabric is often under two. We stand cushions on edge so air moves through both faces instead of trapping damp against the deck. Plan to leave the piece unused for the evening rather than the weekend.
For frequency: every 12 to 24 months on a family sofa, closer to 12 with pets or a piece that gets daily use. As with carpet, the case for doing it isn't only appearance — grit worked down into the weave abrades fibres every time somebody sits down, and that wear is what eventually ends the piece.

Nobody can price upholstery off a room count. A two-seat synthetic sofa and a seven-piece natural-fibre sectional with a chaise are entirely different jobs, and the same sofa costs differently depending on whether it needs enzyme work on three cushions. So we quote per piece: tell us what you have, roughly what the fabric is, and what's wrong with it, and you'll have a number before we arrive. Every estimate is free and the number you approve is the number you pay — no "while we're here" additions.
Booking upholstery alongside carpet cleaning is almost always the better value, since the truck, the setup and the drive are already paid for.
Soaked furniture is a different job — and a faster clock.
If a sofa or mattress got wet from a leak, an overflow or a flood rather than a spill, cleaning it is the wrong question. Foam and padding hold water in the core long after the cover feels dry, and that's exactly the condition mould needs within 24 to 48 hours. That's water damage restoration: extract, dry to documented moisture targets, verify, and only then decide what's salvageable. Sometimes the honest answer is that the cushion cores are gone even though the covers are fine — and if the loss was sudden and accidental, your policy usually covers the contents too.
