Why the smell comes back — the part most companies skip.
Urine is not a surface stain. It goes through the carpet face, soaks into the pad underneath, spreads outward as it goes, and on a repeat accident reaches the subfloor. When it dries it leaves behind crystallised salts, and those crystals are hygroscopic — they pull moisture out of humid air and reactivate. That is why a spot cleaned in March smells again the first muggy week of July, and why running a rental machine over it can make it worse for a few days: the water woke it up without taking it out.
So the actual job is not cleaning a stain. It is locating the full contamination, breaking down the organic material where it sits, and physically extracting it from all three layers. Anything that only addresses the top layer is a deodoriser with extra steps.
Finding the whole problem — it is bigger than the mark.
The visible spot is the smallest part of the picture. Liquid spreads as it travels down, so the footprint in the pad is routinely two or three times the diameter of what you can see on the surface, and older accidents often have no visible mark at all. We inspect with a UV light, which makes dried urine fluoresce, and use a moisture meter to map how far it actually went. Only then do we know what we are treating.
This is also the moment we can tell you something useful about your animal: a scattering of small spots along a wall reads differently from one saturated patch by a door, and where the accidents are usually explains something about why they are happening.
The treatment, in order.
- Locate — UV inspection and moisture mapping to find the true extent, not the visible mark
- Break it down — an enzyme that digests the organic material at the source rather than perfuming over it
- Dwell — enzymes are biological and they need time to work; rushing this step is why treatments fail
- Sub-surface extraction — a tool that flushes and recovers through the carpet and the pad without lifting the floor
- Neutralise and groom — so nothing sticky is left to attract soil back to the same spot
- Re-check — back over the area with the UV light before we call it done
Enzymes are not deodorisers and the two are not interchangeable. A deodoriser adds a scent that outlasts your patience but not the problem. An enzyme removes what is making the smell. If a company reaches for a bottle of fragrance in the first ten minutes, you have your answer about what you are buying.

Odour and staining are separate problems with separate odds. The odour we can nearly always resolve. The visible stain is chemistry: urine is alkaline and can permanently dye the fibre, particularly on wool or light nylon, and heat locks that dye in for good. This is the single most important thing to know — steam cleaning a urine spot before treating it is how a removable stain becomes a permanent one. If a previous company hot-water-extracted the area first, we will be straight with you about what is left to gain.
The other honest limit is saturation. A spot that has been re-soaked in the same place over months means the pad is holding contamination and the subfloor underneath is likely stained too. Sub-surface extraction handles the large majority of accidents without lifting anything, but past a certain point the real fix is replacing that section of pad and sealing the subfloor. We would rather quote you that once than clean the same square metre three times.
Beyond carpet — the places people forget to check.
If a smell persists after the carpet is genuinely clean, it is somewhere else in the room. The usual suspects are the sofa or the bed the animal actually sleeps on, the cushion deck underneath the covers, baseboards and the gap where carpet meets the wall, and the tack strip itself. Hard floors are not exempt either — urine wicks into the grout lines of tile and sits in the seams of laminate.
We handle the fabric side as upholstery cleaning and the hard-surface side as tile and grout cleaning, and it is usually worth doing them in the same visit — there is little point clearing the carpet if the dog's favourite chair is still holding the same smell.
Vomit, faeces and sanitising — and when it is a bigger job.
Same principle, different chemistry: break down the organic material, extract it, sanitise the area, and check how far it soaked. Bile in vomit can stain in its own right and, like urine, sets with heat.
One thing worth saying plainly: if the contamination is extensive, has been there a long time, or involves an animal that was ill, that is a sanitation job with a health dimension rather than a cleaning appointment. The same is true if the carpet also got wet from a leak — combining moisture with organic material is exactly the condition mould wants. We will tell you which conversation we are having.
